We completed a full renovation of our townhouse and are so happy we chose HBC as our general contractor. David is a true gentleman, leading the project with kindness and compassion. The project to renovate our 40 year old West Vancouver house was originally developed and expected to be completed cooperatively by ourselves, our architects and Hughes Brothers. As is often the case in such projects, it grew. We found the process of completing a project of this scope isn’t emotionally free from stress, disappointment or worry. With the practical experience, flexibility and guidance of David, his crews and the trades he engaged the work was pushed steadily forward.

A few of job phases expanded to such an unforeseen degree as to otherwise cause everyone involved to flinch. No one did! As a result, we gained confidence in most everyone’s commitment, their abilities and competency that we willingly expanded our own commitment. In the end, all of us involved and, especially the people associated with Hughes Brothers brought the project home. We think everyone should be proud of what was achieved. We’re excited to be moving back to our newly rebuilt, now contemporary home!

Hughes Brothers Construction has handled two large projects for us, a major kitchen renovation with custom cabinetry, and a complete exterior overhaul of our home. The results are excellent. Our 1950’s bungalow is now a modern West Coast home. Every aspect of the work, from the choice of trades to Hughes Brothers input on design decisions were first class!

We’ve had many opportunities over a number of years to work with David and his team. Several years ago he added two wings to our heritage home in North Vancouver, paying careful attention to the original structure and the need to retain its character in even the smallest detail. For our design and his work the District presented us with a Heritage Restoration Award. I’m an architectural and interior designer with a thriving practice. In those capacities David and I have worked together for over a dozen years on residential projects on the North Shore and on the Sechelt Peninsula. These projects have ranged from newly designed ground-up construction to major renovation and smaller restorations. David’s own team of builders and skilled millworkers is rounded out by a tried-and-true selection of sub-trades, most who have been with him for as long as I have known him. During an 8 month period, David, in collaboration with our architect, transformed a dated waterfront condo into a sleek, functional urban residence. Just completed a major condo renovation with Hughes Brothers Construction.  David and crew sure know what they are doing both professional and pleasant.  To allow me a sense of true dimension, David sketched out the whole project. It was beyond the call of duty. Neighbours in our building commented on how pleasant they were and how immaculate they kept the common area.  There is no question… I highly recommend Hughes Brothers Construction for your renovation or new construction.

You know this but I’m going to say it anyway… still crazy about the house and the team that built it after all these years.  Ten years today I moved in!  Can you believe it!

As our family grew older, our needs changed and what we wanted out of our house changed with it. The decision was to move or renovate and given the hot real estate market and lack of affordable and suitable options, renovate it was. Our house was built in 1964 with separate kitchen and dining areas and a living room that was rarely used. Dave and Rick hatched a vision to open up the space and Dave took the time to draw up a functional plan and even created a 3-dimensional model of the house including the proposed new covered deck area.

After a review of quotes for two different renovation options, we decided upon a plan.  Work began quickly and we were immediately impressed with the professionalism, work ethic and talent. It was obvious from the outset we were getting quality workmanship in all facets of this renovation.

Six months later we were complete.  Walls were removed, structural beams installed above the ceiling and we had a brand new open plan kitchen and living area, with features we didn’t know existed, like an under-counter microwave.  Hardwood floors had been installed to replace ceramic tile and expertly matched to the existing floors; the rear wall and windows were removed and quality Eclipse doors installed in their place; exceptional quality wood cabinets were built to suit; a beautiful glass and cedar 300 bottle capacity wine storage enclosure was designed and built; a new fireplace insert was installed and tiled floor-to-ceiling feature constructed; a farmhouse sink and Caesarstone countertops were added (a portion of the latter re-cut and re-installed after Dave himself felt it wasn’t quite right the first time).

Every sub trade Dave used was professional, on time and did quality work.  Dave made sure all trades got on the job when the time was right, so delays were rare and usually on our account.  Despite an extensive reno, we only lost the use of our kitchen for a couple of weeks, with temporary wood counters and a plumbed sink installed to ensure we could still function without having to spend the time and money to relocate.  We have now been in our renovated home for a few months and are ecstatic with the results.  We are already thinking about “Phase 2” and will not hesitate to use Hughes Bros.

David you should patent whatever you eat for breakfast. You are endlessly cheerful and patient with clients ranging from gnats to giants!

We have just finished a significant renovation Hughes Brothers Construction.  It could not have turned out better, the workmanship was excellent, it was finished on time and within a reasonable budget.

Renovations can be a time of stress and apprehension.  David’s easy going personality, cheerful disposition and positive attitude made our renovation stress free.  His excellent communication skills kept us well informed of the job status and any issues requiring decisions by us.  David was always available by text, email, cell phone or job site visit to discuss issues of the day.  He provided creative and thoughtful solutions to issues as they arose or as new requests were made.

His HBC staff were skilled, timely and pleasant to have on the job.  Our neighbors all commented how reliable his crew was.  Our town-home is in a Strata Development with specific rules for contractors and renovations.  David, his staff and his sub-trades made an effort to respect those rules and not be disruptive to our neighbors.  His long term relationships with his sub-trades ensures they show up on time, do quality work and in a timely fashion.  The sub-trades also provided suggestions that have enhanced our finished project.

A renovation results in many details and decisions, most of which you try to identify and answer before the job starts.  Now that our job is complete we can see finishing details that were not specified in the design plan but David ensured were not overlooked.  The result is a quality renovation.  David takes great pride in the work he does, and it certainly comes out in the final result.  We would recommend David Hughes and HBC to anyone doing a renovation.
